This spectacular pattern, Imagine Poncho, by Marci Marra is based on a mosaic in Central Park dedicated to John Lennon. This show stopping piece looks far more complicated than it actually is. It's stranded work and the motif repeats all the way around. 

Marci included some nice details like slits on the bottom side of the poncho so you can move your arms without the poncho riding up. If you don't like the turtleneck, you can make it a crewneck instead. 

There is enough yarn to make the matching Imagine Hat, too. Pattern sold on Ravelry.
